Responsibilities

The Director of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and management of all health, safety, and environmental programs within the organization, with a focus on renewable energy projects. This individual will ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety and environmental regulations while driving initiatives to minimize risks, ensure sustainability, and improve safety performance across all operations. Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Strategy: Lead the HSE department to develop, implement, and continuously improve safety, health, and environmental policies and procedures. Advise senior leadership on strategic decisions related to HSE practices and sustainability initiatives. Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including project management, engineering, and operations teams, to ensure safe and compliant operations.
  • Health & Safety Management: Oversee the development and enforcement of safety protocols, including emergency response, risk assessment, and hazard analysis, tailored to the renewable energy sector. Implement and maintain a safety training program to ensure all employees and contractors understand safety procedures and potential hazards. Conduct regular audits and inspections to ensure compliance with safety standards. Investigate accidents and incidents, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions.
  • Environmental Compliance & Sustainability: Ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations (e.g., air, water, waste management) relevant to the renewable energy industry. Promote sustainable practices and energy efficiency within the company and across projects. Oversee the monitoring and reporting of environmental impacts, including carbon footprint reduction and waste management. Engage with regulatory bodies and ensure the company is prepared for any changes in environmental regulations.
  • Risk Management: Develop and implement risk assessment programs to proactively identify and mitigate potential safety and environmental risks. Monitor and report on safety performance metrics and implement improvement programs. Ensure proper documentation and record-keeping for health, safety, and environmental programs, audits, and compliance checks.
  • Team Development & Management: Lead and mentor the HSE team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, safety awareness, and environmental responsibility. Work with other departments to create cross-functional teams that support HSE initiatives. Provide guidance and support on HSE-related issues, troubleshooting, and problem resolution.
  • Training & Awareness: Develop and implement training and awareness programs for all levels of staff, including contractors, focused on health, safety, and environmental policies. Stay up-to-date on industry best practices and changes in laws, regulations, and technology related to health, safety, and environmental management in the renewable energy sector.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in health, safety, and environmental management within the renewable energy industry or a related sector.
  • Strong knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, EPA, etc.).
  • Experience in risk management and developing proactive safety programs.
  • Proven track record in driving safety and environmental culture changes within large organizations.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams.
